Fencing for hedgehogs is getting a lot more attention these days. We take a look at how you can make sure your garden fences are wildlife friendly.
With autumn in full swing some of you might be lucky enough to see some prickly friends arriving in your gardens; hedgehogs. When encouraging wildlife into your garden, it is important to consider whether you have wildlife friendly fencing and what measures you can take in order to make your garden safer for wild animals.
One way you might think you can help hedgehogs and other smaller wildlife is by cutting a hole in your fencing in order to give them space to roam. But how do you cut a hole in your fence? Is that practical? Most likely not.
Another option is to dig a hedgehog tunnel underneath your fence between you and your neighbours. This is an easier option for those with grassy gardens, but those with patio areas may find this difficult.
Our hedgehogs really need these holes but we hear you, there are hurdles in terms of practicality. So to help our little friends and make it easy for you, we have a more practical solution for providing safe and accessible fencing for hedgehogs, gravel boards with pre-cut holes.
It’s an easy choice, our wildlife friendly fencing will help to save Britain’s hedgehogs.
Since July 2020, hedgehogs have been listed as vulnerable to extinction and we can all agree that the UK would be a sad place without them. So we have to look out for our prickly pals in whatever ways we can, including using hedgehog friendly fencing.
Why hedgehogs need holes in our garden fences
Hedgehogs need to be able to roam far and wide in search of food, mates and nesting sites. This is where the holes in fences come in. The Wildlife Trusts has further advice available in this easy-to-follow guide.
When it comes to hedgehog friendly fencing you should consider any of the options, cutting a hole in your fence, digging a channel underneath it or putting in a gravel board with a pre-cut hedgehog hole.
If you want to purchase a gravel board with a pre-cut hole, you can pick one up from our fencing and landscape centre in Chichester or from our website. Our team will also be happy to help install them if you need assistance.
