Part 1

Overcoming commercial fencing job challenges

As the Managing Director at Knight Fencing, I know that commercial fencing job challenges are frequent. And our recent garden centre fencing project at the new B&M Stores shop in Eastbourne was no exception.

You’ve got to be ready for challenges – they’re part and parcel of fencing work. Every job normally has something unusual or unique about it. And this one was no different. This time it was about helping to stop a very particular type of theft.

What fencing challenge did B&M Stores set us?

As part of the new shop, which will open later this year, B&M Stores will have a garden centre at the back of site and, with fencing forming the rear perimeter, they want to make it impossible for goods to be passed through the fencing.

This meant reducing the gap of the fencing to no more than 10mm – small enough that no products can go through. And following a full survey of the site, we came up with a solution to meet this very specific commercial fencing job challenge.

What fencing solution did we come up with?

To deliver a solution to B&M Stores’ commercial fencing job challenge, we decided to add mesh coils of flat wrap razor wire to the fence meshes on the inner face of the fencing, to a height of 2.3 metres. Overall, the fencing reaches 4.8 metres, combining CLD Securus galvanised prison mesh fencing panels, galvanised welded mesh rolls and barbed tape.

In addition, we also installed Tenax windbreak mesh netting to the inside face of the fence, to a height of 4.2 metres. This acts primarily to protect the store and customers against the elements, in particular strong wind, but it also serves as an additional anti-theft feature.

This is what was said about our solution and our work

What was the reaction to our innovative fencing solution (which we also applied to the service yard gates and the fire exit gate)?

It was strong thumbs up. This is what the main contractor, who oversaw the store building project, had to say about our work:

Engaging with Knight Fencing, our preferred contractor, I found their expertise and knowledge invaluable. We were able to collaborate easily and I was able to foster a good working relationship with them. I was impressed by their work ethic and discipline, which resulted in safe outcomes and zero snagging. Thank you, Knight Fencing, for a job well done.
