An 8-step guide how to install artificial grass in your garden.

Step 1:          Remove your existing turf to a depth of 5 to 8 cms, depending on the soil type (heavy clay soil needs a deeper base). Edge the area with a timber frame.

Step 2:          Install the first layer of weed membrane and fill the area with type 1 MOT gravel.

Step 3:          Compact the type 1 MOT gravel with a wacker plate and cover with around 1 cm of sharp sand or granite dust.

Step 4:          Lay the second weed membrane and fix it to the top of the timber frame. Note: dog owners shouldn’t have a membrane directly under the grass as it could absorb dog urine.

Step 5:          Install your artificial grass using a sharp knife to cut the rolls to the required size and shape.

Step 6:          If you’re joining two rolls of grass, cut out a couple of stitch lines and join using glue and tape.

Step 7:          Trim the grass rolls and fix the grass to the timber frame by carefully screwing or nailing every 10 to 15 cms, taking care to open the pile of the grass to avoid fibres being caught or twisted.

Step 8:          Step back, admire and give yourself a pat on the back for a job well done.

If you want to install artificial grass on your deck or patio, simply put down 1 cm foam underlay as a cushioning surface and to cover any uneven surfaces or gaps. The underlay goes glue-side down and the Grassmate grass is glued to the underlay.
