How to stop decking rotting

When investing in new timber decking, it is important to find out how to stop decking from rotting. When outdoor decking is not installed with longevity in mind, deck frame rot can be a common problem, in fact some poor quality frames can disintegrate completely after just 5 – 10 years.

Unfortunately for those with this problem, it can be expensive to fix as the only solution is to completely replace the deck. However if you are considering installing or are in the process of having a new deck installed, there are measures you can take to stop decking from rotting and preserve it.

The most common way to preserve timber decking is to treat it with a good quality outdoor wood preserver. This will need to be reapplied after a period of time but stops your decking from the battering of bad weather.

Taking this one step further, we are recommending that to preserve decking, you cover your decking frame with deck tape. Deck tape is a new and easy solution to protect your decking from rot even further. We are now stocking Walther Strong deck tape to help you do this yourself at home.

How to apply decking tape

You can put quality deck tape on new and existing timber deck frames – it fully protects both, giving a waterproof and weathertight seal.

Quality decking tape has these benefits:

  • It’s easy to tear and won’t get stuck to itself
  • You don’t need gloves to apply it
  • The tape adhesive is strong – it’ll last for 50 years
  • It self-seals around fasteners (no annoying fiddly bits)
  • Long-term exposure to sunshine won’t damage it
  • It works on damp timber and below freezing (so you can apply it any time)

Applying deck tape will help your frame last longer. This means that you spend less on maintenance and repairs and you can enjoy your garden decking for longer.

This video has technical information and tips to help you apply it:

Fantastic service from start to finish. Terry was professional, knowledgeable, and kept me well informed throughout the entire process. The job was highly labour-intensive, as all materials had to be carried in and the old fencing removed from a very awkward location in relation to their van, yet nothing was ever too much trouble. Terry and his co-worker Samantha are absolute grafters who worked incredibly hard, and the results speak for themselves. I’m extremely happy with my new fencing and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them.
