Installing secure area fencing at Bluebird House inpatient mental health unit in Totton, Hampshire

Knight Fencing was selected to supply and install secure area fencing at Bluebird House mental health unit, which is situated on the grounds of Tatchbury Mount Hospital in Totton, Hampshire.

Bluebird House is a purpose-built, medium-secure facility that specialises in the treatment of young people with diverse mental health needs. A new open space for residents within the unit was planned and a specific fencing solution for the area was required.

The facility prioritises both safety and comfort for its residents, and the fencing for the open space had to reflect this balance. We recommended and installed Protek 358 security weld-mesh fencing. Base-plated posts, bolted into the existing concrete floor, were used with the fencing panels.
Supplied by Alexandra Security, this type of fencing is widely used because of its strong anti-climb properties, and its flat panel, tightly spaced apertures and full-length clamp bar were ideally suited to the requirements of the secure open space. Also, because this fencing carries the British Standard mark, it can be used at NHS facilities, such as Bluebird House.

An additional requirement for the inpatient open area fencing was the prevention of direct contact among residents, while maintaining a sense of openness and comfort. To meet this need, decorative woodland screening panels with a bluebell wood design were fixed to the face of the Protek 358 security weld-mesh fencing.

The work was completed on time and to budget, and Bluebird House now has a secure open space that can be used to support its young residents. The client was very happy with the work and the fencing and panels continue to do their job to a high standard.
